A name shrouded in mystery

The name of the village of Servian may have its origins in the latin Cervius ("stag" - cerf in French)  or perhaps Servius (latin name of the owner of the Servanius domaine). Whichever is right, the history of Servianstarts in the middle ages. Traces of that past still exist in the old village shaped in a circle with two concentric walls and a watchtower. Some buildings were built with stones from the quarry at nearby Saint-Adrien which is nowadays a beautiful private garden which can be visited from Easter to October, ranked among the most beautiful gardens in France. The wine business is still very present with many independent wine makers and a wine cooperative.
